Magic Burst L is a very high damage secondary action option for Casters and Healers. It doubles all spell damage for 20 seconds while also doubling the mp cost with a 90 second cooldown. It should be paired with Wisdom of the Aetherweaver for healers and Wisdom of the Elder for casters.
Basic Usage
Try and line it up with buff windows or your higher burst attacks where you can.
Be sure to use Lucid Dreaming on cooldown when using it as the MP requirements can be very noticeable.
Damage Optimisation
As a general rule, always try to line it up with raid buffs or high burst attacks. You can use a tincture before you activate Magic Burst so it can cover the entire Magic Burst phase. Each job has specific spells they want to weave Magic Burst after outlined below. As Red Mage's enhanced melee combo gcds are counted as weaponskills, your melee combo is not affected by Magic Burst.
- Summoner: Weave after Summon Bahamut
- Red Mage: Weave after Enchanted Redoublement (last part of your enhanced melee combo)
- Black Mage: Weave after Fire 3
- Healers: Weave after your first pre-pull gcd
Job Specific Tips
Summoner
Weave Magic Burst after Summon Bahamut gcd. You want to be able to fit in all your Bahamut gcds inside Magic Burst phase.
Red Mage
As your melee combo is not affected by Magic Burst, weave it after last part of your melee combo. This way you can make use of Verholy/Verflare inside Magic Burst phase.
Black Mage
Before the fight make sure to have a Polyglot stack. After your ice phase, weave Magic Burst with Fire 3. You want to fit 2 Fouls under Magic Burst. You can use Thunder 3 as a filler for your last gcd.
Healers
Even though there might be slight changes to healer gameplay with Magic Burst, it is generally the same procedure. Weave it after your pre-pull gcd and use your cooldowns as normal. For White Mage, use Presence of Mind after your DoT.
Stacking Spell Speed and Haste
Most jobs will benefit from stacking Spell Speed and Haste to make your gcd as low as possible to fit more gcds inside Magic Burst phase. This requires you to meld Spell Speed on your Vermillion Cloak, use Spell Speed accessories, Cassie Earring and Blitzring. This is rather expensive/time consuming, moreover blindly melding Spell Speed and using Spell Speed accessories can hurt your damage more than it helps, so as long as you can hit 2.23 gcd safely, you should be fine to fit 9 gcds inside Magic Burst.
On summoner specifically, hitting 2.13 and lower gcd lets you use a 7th Astral Impulse (contrary to normal 6), making Magic Burst even more useful.
Magic Burst Chaining
One thing casters can do to further increase their damage is to take multiple sets of Magic Burst L paired with Wisdom of the Elder. This allows them to 'chain' Magic Burst's every burst window by switching to a fresh set each time to ignore the 90 second cooldown on the action. Healers can chain Magic Burst too, however with the absence of spell cost reduction from Wisdom of the Elder, they will be out of mana very quickly. In order to mitigate this, you can 'weave' in a Rejuvenate tray to regain 5000 MP, then proceed to pop your other Magic Burst tray and so on.
In general, only Summoner really benefits from Magic Burst chaining, as they will be able to use Magic Burst on every Bahamut phase.
On Red Mage, you will want to build up your White and Black Mana to execute your melee combo and be able to use your Verflare/Verholy, so chaining multiple Magic Burst sets on Red Mage is not worth it in general.
On Black Mage, you can try to use multiple sets during your fire phase, however you will be lacking 2 Fouls on some of those fire phase windows. Even though chaining Magic Burst might work nicely on Black Mage, it is not really worth it in general.
On healers, as mentioned above, you will need to weave in a Rejuvenate tray to be even able to cast your spells, otherwise you will be out of mana to cast any spells. It is not recommended to chain Magic Burst as a healer except special/meme runs.
Does Magic Burst work on Damage over Time (DoT) Spells?
Yes, Magic Burst does work on DoTs. You always want to use your DoT as a healer under Magic Burst, and on Black Mage you can fit a Thunder 3 filler in during your fire phase if your gcd threshold allows it.
